why hire me instead of diy?

Accuracy - Modern bookkeeping software makes it simple and easy to do your own bookkeeping. If your business is small and simple, you can get by with DIY-ing your books and having your tax preparer polish it up at year-end.

But the more your business grows, the more important it is that your financial statements are correct. Knowing with certainty how much your business is bringing in and spending can help you make better, more informed business decisions and grow! Having a great bookkeeper like me on your team will make sure tricky things such as payroll, loans, transfers between accounts, capitalization, and owner’s draws are handled correctly.

Save money - Hiring a professional can save you more money than it costs you. Someone who pays attention to the details and asks the right questions can catch little things that save you money. Simple things like noticing a duplicate subscription, being overcharged by a vendor, or catching a bill that hasn't been paid yet.

Save time - Hiring a bookkeeper will also save you a lot of time if you’ve been doing the books yourself. No more giving up your Saturdays or late nights spent trying to keep your books up-to-date! As a business owner, your time is valuable and you have a lot of responsibilities and job duties you fulfill.

While important and necessary, bookkeeping doesn’t actually bring in money for your business. Having a professional take care of your bookkeeping frees up your time to work on bringing in more clients and revenue.

My Bookkeeping Process

Classification: The marvels of modern technology do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to getting the bank and credit card data into your books. Where I come in is in the categorization of transactions, organizing your financial data in meaningful ways. This is the foundation of your financial statements and it’s important that it’s done correctly.

Clarification: I will also contact you throughout the month with questions I have on transactions or other information I need from you. Completing the bookkeeping for your business is a collaborative effort, and I need your help to do it! But don’t worry, I’ll do all of the boring and tedious parts of bookkeeping you’ve been avoiding.

Reconciliation: Once all of the data has been entered, the bank and credit card accounts need to be reconciled. This is a crucial step to ensure that what is being reported on your financial statements is accurate and complete. Duplicated income or missing expenses affect your bottom line, which also determines how much you’ll owe in taxes.

Reporting: Detailed financial reports so you can compare present performance to the past, evaluate your business’ health, and plan for the future. Having accurate books doesn’t do you or your business any good if you don’t do something with that information!

Ongoing Communication: I want to make sure that you’re getting the most out of my services. Part of that is you reaching out to me with questions or concerns that come up throughout the month. I don’t charge by the hour, so you don’t have to worry about surprises on next month’s bill.

Communication with CPA: With my background as a staff accountant, I know what your tax preparer needs for doing your taxes. I keep this in mind throughout the year when classifying transactions. Simple things like splitting out owner’s compensation for a corporation or putting non-deductible expenses in a clearly-labeled account allow your accountant to focus on the bigger picture.

During tax season, I will communicate directly with your tax preparer, send them the necessary documents and statements, and answer any questions that come up. Getting your taxes prepared has never been so easy!

While preparing business returns as a Staff Accountant, I cleaned up a lot of messy books. I saw that business owners really needed someone to keep their bookkeeping straight throughout the year and not just do a quick cleanup once a year.

Having this experience with the back-end of preparing business tax returns makes me a much better bookkeeper because I know what your tax pro is looking for!
